Master of Laws (LLM)

The School of Law offers the following LLM programmes on both a full-time and distance learning bases.
· LLM Commercial Law
· LLM International Commercial Law
· LLM International Trade Law

About the Programme

The three programmes on offer follow a similar structure irrespective of whether they are taught full-time or distance learning.
On each of the programme students students are expected to successfully complete six modules. The choice of modules will depend upon the LLM that you have undertaken to study. Following successful completion of the six modules, students are then expected to proceed to the project stage of the programme. The project must be relevant to the LLM that a student is enrolled on.
The following provides a brief description of each of the three programmes followed by a description of the content of the various modules on offer.

LLM Commercial Law
The LLM Commercial Law offers students the opportunity to study. A number of subjects of particular relevance to commercial activities. This programme concentrates mainly on the domestic law of the UK. Students must chose at least three of their option from the list A below.

LLM International Commercial Law
The LLM offers students the opportunity to study a variety of commercial law subjects in an international context. This LLM provides the opportunity for students to study four options related to various aspects of international commercial activities such as international sales contracts and international dispute resolution. This LLM has proven to particularly popular with students worldwide. In order to qualify for this award, students are required to select the majority of the optional specialist subjects from these subjects which have an international law dimension.
International Trade Law
In order to qualify for the LLM in International Trade Law, students are required to complete two additional core modules in addition to legal method and research and foundations of commercial law. Students must study carriage of goods by sea and international sale contracts.

All the above modules are compulsory for LLM International Commercial Law and LLM International Trade Law Legal method and research, foundations of commercial law, and international commercial law are compulsory.

Project
Students wishing to gain an LLM award must complete a 16000 - 20000 word research project. The research topic must be relevant to the particular LLM award. Students are required to submit a sheet written proposal outlining their proposed research.

Assessment
Each core and option modules is assessed through completion of a written assignment. Students are required to submit an assignment of no more than 4000 words for each modules. The six assignment to be assessed are handed in on specific in he end of each module and assignment questions build on the work understanding during module study.
