Introduction:

APS offers the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) course, providing the individual with the opportunity to demonstrate his/her extensive knowledge and understanding of a particular subject leading to the completing of a major dissertation.

The PhD degree will be awarded for either a dissertation, or a dissertation in combination with coursework. The dissertation must demonstrate the students capacity for research, analytical and methodological thinking and the ability to present the result of this research in a manner which underlines a grasp of the subject matter.

The student has a choice in the selection of the subject which constitutes the basis for research. The student is expected to work closely with the appointed supervisor for the project. On completion, the dissertation will be subjected to examination by two other faculty members. The candidate for the PhD degree may be expected to defend the work.

Application for the PhD

When the candidate has selected an area of work, he/she is required to produce a project proposal. The project proposal required the student to highlight the particular area of research and the means and methods that are to be employed in achieving the research objectives in particular, the proposal should include the research hypothesis and problems, literature review, research decision with timescales.

After the research proposal has been submitted to the university, appropriate faculty supervisor will be allocated to assist and assess the student's research project. Timetables or achievement and results will be decided and agreed between the supervisor and the student.

In some cases, coursework may be a requirement if, in the opinion of the supervisor, there are areas which the student may have difficulty with.

Entry Requirements

A graduate from an approved university with a bachelor's degree with a minimum second-class honours or a master's degree. The university is prepared to accept the students with professional qualifications equivalent to a bachelor's degree. Students who do not satisfy the above criteria to pursue and complete their proposed research programmed.

Duration

Students are expected to complete their PhD within three to five years of intensive research and writing.
